The Eighth Chapter of Ushnakmal Moolchand Banaras

In the timeless city of Varanasi, where looms hum in rhythm with temple bells, Ushnakmal Moolchand Banaras has carried forward the art of handwoven silk since 1885.

For over a century, this house has stood not merely as a store, but as a living archive of Banarasi handloom preserving techniques, relationships, and values that cannot be replicated by machines or modern shortcuts.

Now, the story enters its eighth chapter.

The Legacy Before Me

I am Kamya Tandon, an eighth-generation custodian of this heritage.

I grew up watching my late grandfather, Jawahar Lal Tandon, treat every saree not as inventory, but as responsibility. Under his guidance, and through the unwavering dedication of my father, Gautam Tandon, and my mother, Neetu Tandon, I learned that legacy is not inherited, it is protected.

Alongside my brother, Saharsh Tandon, I step into this role not to change what exists, but to strengthen it.

What 1885 Really Means

To say “Est. 1885” is not a marketing line.

It means:
    •    Generations of weavers who have worked with our family.
    •    Design archives passed down, not downloaded.
    •    Techniques like kadwa and katraua, preserved when easier alternatives existed.
    •    Trust built across bridal trousseaus, festivals, and heirloom wardrobes.

The name Ushnakmal Moolchand Banaras has endured because it chose patience over scale and authenticity over expansion.

The Eighth Generation’s Responsibility

Being the eighth generation is not about modernising tradition beyond recognition.

It is about:
    •    Educating a new audience on what true handloom is.
    •    Strengthening transparency in an industry clouded by imitation.
    •    Ensuring weaving communities remain respected and supported.
    •    Archiving the past while designing for the future.

This chapter is about continuity with clarity.

About telling the story of Banaras not loudly, but correctly.

A Legacy That Lives Forward

Many speak of heritage. Few carry it forward.

As I step into this role, guided by the foundation laid by my grandfather and nurtured by my parents, I do so with gratitude and responsibility.

Ushnakmal Moolchand Banaras is not simply one of the old names of Banaras.

It is a name that has lived through generations and now, in its eighth, continues to weave its future with the same integrity with which it began.
